SOKA GAKKAI INTERNATIONAL (SGI)

As the Queensland Community Centre for the Buddhist network Soka Gakkai international, the brief called for a place of worship within an industrial and commercial precinct. In keeping with its context, the building takes its cues materially and structurally from industrial architecture, adding a joyous burst of colour to hint at the spiritual program within. The design perches its primary hall space and meeting rooms above the ground, giving rise to an aspirational form that appears to float above its surroundings. This approach enables the building to command a significant street presence, while freeing the ground plane to provide ample access and parking.
